Dr. Harper subscribes to a biopsychosocial understanding of health. This approach posits that psychological( including thoughts, emotions, and behaviors), biological and social factors all play a significant role in one’s overall health. Thus we can best achieve health by focusing on all of these factors rather than from a purely medical stand point. Our minds and bodies interact with stressors and outside life events such that pain and disease can be exacerbated by stress and vice versa. Caring for the mind and body concurrently is essential to holistic healing.
Dr. Harper received her B.A. in psychology from Pepperdine University and her Masters and Doctorate degrees from Bowling Green State University in clinical psychology. She chose to focus in the track of Health Psychology while studying at BGSU, thus promotes wellness through interventions to include weight loss, pain management, smoking cessation, insomnia, relaxation techniques, guided self-hypnosis, and coping with chronic medical problems. One can achieve maximal health by starting “from the inside out.” In other words, change must start in the mind in order for health promoting behaviors to follow consistently. Dr. Harper uses her background to guide individuals through this process.
Dr. Harper has also spent years working in the VA system and as a contractor for the Army with active duty military returning home from numerous deployments. The Department of Defense has invested large amounts of resources in training their providers in therapies that work quickly and effectively such that their soldiers can return to the field. Given this, Dr. Harper has extensive experience working with anxiety disorders such as panic, healing from trauma, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, phobias, depression, and generalized worry using brief models of therapy and evidence based practices designed to work quickly and effectively.
For the latter purposes, Dr. Harper is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which are all evidence based practices that have proven to help individuals to heal from a wide variety of life events that may have changed how they function and approach life. Through rigorous research, these techniques have been shown to reduce the hold negative experiences may have on people’s lives, be it from a violent crime, natural disaster, car or other type of accident, emotional, sexual or physical abuse, losing a loved one, infidelity, or even childhood experiences that continue to be unresolved. These events can set dysfunctional feelings, beliefs, and behaviors in place that eventually become problematic patterns. These “replaying tapes” are often self-defeating and leave people feeling trapped in their current state of mind.
